New search interface

I was doing a search the other day (on the big G) and noticed that half-way through my search the results display page changed and asked me to select my location at the top of the page. Now, I selected Perth, Western Australia, but immediately started to think,

  1. Who decides what websites to include – the site owner or the search engine?
  2. If the site owner, how do we tell the location to the big G?
  3. If it’s the search engines, what information do they use to work out the location?

Well, a few things come to mind:

  1. Geographical hosting is very important. If you site is for Perth, Australia, make sure it’s hosted in Australia.
  2. Add geo meta tags.
  3. Select location in the webmater’s tools, if it’s a top TLD domain.

I’d like to see how it all pans out.
